Integrating Habitats design goals
Category 1:
Mixed use development and riparian forest
Design goals:
- Enhance and improve existing forest areas on site and near streams, and connect them to larger forested areas
- Manage stormwater runoff creatively and resourcefully
- Provide housing, retail areas and recreational opportunities for a diverse community
- Use materials and designs that are energy efficient and increase livability
- Create safe links to bike trails, mass transit stops and recreational areas
Category 2:
Retail (commercial) development and lowland forest
Design goals:
- Use designs and features that balance economic needs and environmental health
- Protect existing wetland and forest areas on site and connect them to larger forested areas
- Create functional, attractive and sustainable parking lots
- Use materials and practices that allow rainwater to soak into the ground instead of flowing into storm drains (reduce impervious surfaces and associated stormwater runoff)
Category 3:
Neighborhood infill development and oak woodland
Design goals:
- Encourage development in existing neighborhoods that limits traffic and congestion
- Foster community relationships, partnerships and volunteer programs that encourage stewardship and knowledge of the environment
- Protect local and regional habitat connections
- Provide affordable housing for a diverse and growing population
